NORTHWEST TERRITORIES PILOT CAR GUIDELINES

Width
Any vehicle exceeding 3.2(10' 6")
> Lights at night, lights and/or flags during the day on all extremities.
>Over dimensions sign on the front and the rear of load vehicles
>Preceded by one escort  vehicle (does not apply to vehicles hauling between Alberta N.W.T. border and Hay River)
>Display one or two rotating amber light(s) on top of the truck tractor cab. (this ONLY applies to vechiles hauling between the Alberta/N.W.T. and Hay River.

Any vehicle exceeding 3.85(12' 7")
>Lights at night, lights and/or flags during the dayon all extremities.
>Over dimension sign on the front and the rear of the load vehicle(s)
>Display one or two rotatating amber light(s) on the top of the truck tractor cab.
> Preceded by one escort/pilot vehicle.

Any vehicle exceeding 4.45m (14' 7")
>Light at night, lights and/or flags during day on all extremities.
>Over-dimension sign on front and rear of load vehicle(s)
>Display one or two rotating amber light(s) on top of the truck tractor cab.
> Preceded by one escort/pilot vehicle.
>Followed by another escort vehicle.

Length
Straight truck trailer combination exceeding 21 m (68'10")
> Permit required.

Truck tractor semi-trailer combination exceeding 25 m (82')
> Permit required.

Pole truck, maximum length 26 m (85' 3")
Any vehicle exceeding 29 m (95' 1").
>Followed by one escort/pilot vehicle
>Permit required.

Height
Any vehicle exceeding 4.2 m (13' 9")
> Permit required

Front Projection
Projection exceeding, 3 m (9' 10" ) from Steering axle.
> Lights at night, light and/or flags during the day on the projection.
> Permit required

Rear Projection
Projection exceeding 1.5 m (4' 11") from rear of vehicle.
> Lights at night, lights and/or flags during the day on the projection.
>Can NOT exceed effective overhang.
>NO permit required

Side Projection
Any load exceeding 15 cm (6") from the side of the vehicle.
> Lights at night, lights and/or flags during the day on the projection.
> NO permit required.
