ALABAMA PILOT CAR REGULATIONS
Alabama Oversize Load Permit Is Needed:
Over 8' 6” wide,
Semi-trailer over 53' 6" long,
Over 13' 6"high

Alabama Oversize Load Information Needed:
Date and time of movement  
Truck make, license # and state
Physical address if starting or stopping inside state
Overweight-need original origin and destination
Containerized-need to know what's inside container

Alabama Oversize Load Times Of Movement
1/2 hour before sunrise, 1/2 hour after sunset Monday - Saturday
No Sunday travel
Loads 120’-150’ restricted from 9 am-3 pm Mon-Fri
Travel prohibited on the following holidays:
New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas
Permit office closed on the above holidays as well as Martin Luther King Day, Washington’s Birthday, Columbus Day, Confederate Memorial Day, Jefferson Davis’ Birthday, & Veteran’s Day.
No travel permitted in fog, snow, ice or less than 500’ visibility

Alabama Legal Load Distances
Alabama Pilot Cars must be a minimum of 500’ front and rear from the load.

Alabama Pilot Car / Escort Vehicle is Required:
Over 12' wide- 2 pilot cars (1 pilot car in front & 1 pilot car in rear)
Over 85' to 105' long- 1 pilot car in rear
Over 105’- 2 pilot cars (1 pilot car in front & 1 pilot car in rear)
Over 16' 11” high- 1 pilot car in front w/ height pole
Rear overhang over 5'- 1 pilot car in rear
Front overhang over 10'- 1 pilot car in front

Alabama Pilot Car Vehicle Requirments:
Vehicle shall be passenger car, pickup truck, carryall or station wagon
Lights: Flashing/Rotating Amber light. Roof mount only. Visible @ 1,000 ft.. 120 degree visibilty.
Warning sign: Yellow or orange background. Width is 48” or more. 10” high x 2” wide black letters. “OVERSIZE LOAD” only!! Front & Rear bumper or Roof Mounting. Sign must be removed, retracted or covered when not escorting
Radio: CB or 2-way radio with at least ½ mile range

Alabama Pilot Car Operator Requirements:
Orange vest or jacket.
Stop / Slow hand sign.
2 ea. 16” square hand flags.
